Summer in December
What’s that feeling you get
hearing that voice or song or music
remembering
who you were with, the thing you were doing
the time, the song,
the black and white picture in your mind
the favorite shirt, the wild hair.
What is that feeling
The down deep feeling
sort of good but empty, sort of sad,
how many years and how many are gone
Getting what we need,
But so many left behind
Listening under the near full moon
The words, the notes,
with that dusty woman.
The hair scent and the feel of goose bumped skin.
Feeling summer in DecemberDSS

This looks metaphorical, but today was definitely a summer day in December here in So Cal, with temps in the 80's! This is a beautiful poem!
Oh my! 80's, I'd go for that! Very glad you liked the poem Janet.
We filter the past through the experiences of life. So often we sift away the bits resulting in a soft focus - making the past much more attractive than it really was. But even so the memories are a joy when we remember when...
That's the beauty of the past, you just remember the parts that you want to. Merry Xmas Val!
This so beautiful...and so poignant. It brought tears to my eyes. Yes, a thought, a song, a painting...so many things can trigger those memories...those memories that make me smile...then end with an empty kinda'-sad feeling.
I've felt Summer in December.
HUGS!!!
Carolyn, it's always good to know when something I have written touches someone's emotions, some memories you smile and feel so good when you think of them but then we realize it's a time of the past and we can't relive them. It sort of hollows you out. Thanks
reflections can be nice, although sometimes bitter-sweet. I was doing something similar tonight when I found a folder of old photos.
Pictures are best for reflections. Pictures always get better with age too.
RYC: OhMYGOSH! I love fruitcake, too! I am the only one in my family who will eat it!

Maybe you’ll get some coal this year…you could have the coal I’ll be getting! I'll share it with you!:-P

Didn't used to like fruitcake until quite I few years ago. Now I think it's a pretty nice gift.
