Winter’s Grip
Dim lighted clouds follow the drizzle rain,
streets are cleaned with brown muddy wash.
But purple spring buds remain tightly wrapped
and the still trees wait for saps nourished life.
This day’s chill air suggests felted coats
and gloves to warm stiffening hands.
For Winter’s grip holds us strong,
refusing the way of Spring’s gentle touch.
But keep a hold on the disappearing dreams
of Summer’s warm yesterdays.
The long hours will come of blazing sun
and the labor of baked yellow clays.DSS

Nice. On the verge of spring is one of my favorite places in time. With the unusually warm weather in March we were a good 6 weeks ahead of schedule (losing our mapling season, unfortunately) until these past few days of deep freese. All the flowers on the ground, covered with ice and snow. But we grow them resilient in Vermont…and spring will be here, soon enough.
Love the promise in this poem.
@SandraErickson - Thank you Sandra!, I’m in Saskatchewan this week and the spring is a little slower coming up here. Slower than I thought it would be. I had to buy another sweater.
Sorry you missed the mapling season but glad you have had nice weather. Does that mean my maple syrup pancakes are going to cost more this year?
I too am waiting for spring – all the pear blossoms are gone and we were poised to embrace warmer temps but just Friday we had hail and slush falling from the sky. Miserable. I am still waiting for Spring.
@murisopsis - It is a lot different weather this far north. I’ve been mowing my yard for over a month where I live. =p
@Iamsurrounded - It is selling, I beleive for around $50/gal. right now. Fortunately we purchased the end of last years boil from a friend during the winter and we are set for the year…when you come to visit, we can go to Morse Farms and have maple cremees. I mean: Saskatchewan? Really?
I missed my typical winter weather here in Ohio. This week we’re in store for 80 degree weather. Ugh.
@SandraErickson - Wow! 50 bucks! Morse Farms it is then!
Yes, don’t make me spell it again, Saskatchewan. Hahaha! That’s where I am. There is no yard mowing here yet.
@heart_beep - I am sorry you’re missing your Winter. Cursed to months and months of beautiful weather. lol! I guess I know what you mean. All four seasons are very important to me too. I just want most of my seasons to be warm.
I love the way you like Winter!
@Iamsurrounded - Hahahahaha! I do love the warm, sunny days but I felt cheated this winter, when we had 80 degree weather in February and no snow! Maybe that’s why Northern Michigan is calling me in the future!
@heart_beep - Sounds like the Upper Peninsula would be perfect.
